The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) selected VS to provide preliminary engineering services for the rehabilitation of bridge which is located on SR 236 over Big Raccoon Creek. The bridge is located approximately 1.37 miles west of US 231 in Putnam County, Indiana. VS was instrumental in securing Federal as well as State funding for the project.
VS performed a field inspection and prepared a bridge inspection report to determine precise scope of work. The present bridge deck had existing patches and delamination. This five-span bridge has two end spans with reinforced concrete girders and remaining three spans with structural steel girders as a superstructure. The existing reinforced concrete girders have hairline cracks. It was concluded that the superstructure in the end spans should be replaced.
This project included deck replacement with deck widening as well as superstructure replacement for both the end spans with structural steel girders. The bridge deck was widened 1’-1 ½” to provide required clear roadway for SR 236. Pier caps were removed and replaced. Pier stem for two of the piers were replaced. End bent caps were removed and replaced with semi-integral caps supported on existing piles.
