VS provided LiDAR feature extraction services for the double track project from Gary to Michigan City (milepost 58.4 to 33.8). The project consisted of adding a second track to the existing Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad over approximately 25 miles. Within the 25 miles, approximately 6 miles of the line are already double tracked.
VS made use of LiDAR data collected for the Positive Train Control (PTC) project (covering 75 miles from South Bend to Chicago) to provide added value to NICTD.
As VS was already surveying the PTC project at the time, minor schedule adjustments allowed data for the central section of the PTC project (covering all of the double track project) to be prioritized and delivered in time for the double track project to move forward immediately after award. Use of PTC data also allowed feature extraction to commence instantly upon notice to proceed and an initial deliverable of the rails and track centerlines to be made within a few weeks of NTP.
Full topographic survey drawings were split into 4 deliveries with areas prioritized by the design team. Full turnaround of the feature extraction and topographic survey took less than eight weeks.
